Google's XR Comeback: But For How Long?
Plus why Gemini makes Apple's AI delays make sense
Hey everyone, itβs Cosmo. Just when you thought Google was done with XR, they're back β but should we trust them? The Android XR announcement signals Google's return to spatial computing, though their track record gives me pause. After pulling the plug on Daydream and a string of promising XR projects, it's hard not to wonder if this is just another fleeting experiment.
The integration of Gemini with Android XR is particularly intriguing, especially in light of Apple's delayed Apple Intelligence features for visionOS. Gemini's ability to perceive and interact with both physical and virtual worlds sets a new bar for AI in XR. Suddenly, Apple's cautious approach with Siri on visionOS makes more sense β they can't afford to launch half-baked AI features in this increasingly competitive landscape.
Meta's reign as the undisputed king of consumer XR is officially over. After years of carrying the torch alone, they're now squeezed between Apple's premium Vision Pro and Google's Android XR platform. While this three-way rivalry might keep Meta executives up at night, it's a win for the rest of us. Nothing drives innovation quite like competition.
