Is this what the Singularity feels like?

Facing the profound risks and incredible promises of our AI-driven future.

Inspired by Mark Henson

Hey everyone, it’s Cosmo.

We’re living in an era where the speed of AI evolution inspires awe—and existential dread. No one can keep up, not even those creating the technology itself.

ChatGPT’s latest image generation features are astonishingly powerful. It crafts detailed infographics loaded with text, effortlessly merges images, and transforms rough sketches into polished YouTube thumbnails. It's no exaggeration to say it can now make almost anything you ask for.

Recently, I found myself staring into the abyss because I see where this is headed. As a designer, seeing ChatGPT rapidly produce icons and mockups triggered a dull, unsettling fear—something I hadn’t truly felt until now.

This has forced me to confront a sobering truth: no career, profession, or industry is immune from automation. We might soon live in a world without jobs.

Anything that can be automated will be automated.

So let me ask you this: when cognitive and manual labor become completely automated, what will humans have left? Perhaps the very idea of working to earn money and survive will become obsolete.

Our economic structure must evolve dramatically to match this new reality. The only serious proposal I’ve heard is Universal Basic Income (UBI), but I’m not entirely convinced it’s the right solution. Honestly, I’m not sure what is. If you’ve encountered something better, please reply to this email—I genuinely want to know.

Back in 2019, I remember passionately supporting Andrew Yang. His warnings about automation deeply resonated with me as a technologist, though they felt distant and theoretical at the time. Turns out, he was merely four years ahead of the curve. When ChatGPT exploded onto the scene in 2023, the urgency became crystal clear.

Yet, there’s another side to this rapid technological advancement. Right now, it’s exhilarating to build and create like never before. Tools like Cursor and Bolt enable us to code entire apps just by using natural language. Vibecoding has opened a revolutionary path for people like me—full of ideas but short on deep technical know-how. It's not perfect yet, but it's improving at breakneck speed.

This AI moment feels similar to the early days of social media and smartphones—bursting with creative possibility and excitement. But remember, we’ve been here before. The previous tech revolutions gave way to scandals and cultural backlash, leaving us cautious of the immense power technology wields.

AI is incredibly potent. Depending on the consciousness behind it, AI can either uplift humanity or devastate it. I’ve never been clearer about my purpose: to actively guide and shape this force so it serves the betterment of society rather than its downfall.

We’re standing on the edge of a future shaped by our collective intentions. Let’s choose wisely.

If you’re curious where AI and creativity are actually colliding—not just hyped—you’ll want to be in NYC April 24 for the AI & Creativity Summit. Artist and the Machine is bringing together a sharp, curated crowd of founders, artists, execs, and pioneers to share real work, ideas, and conversations about what’s next. I’ve attended several of their salons over the past year, and they have all been excellent. I hope to see you there!
