OpenAI's SearchGPT: is Google's reign coming to an end?

Hi everyone, it’s Cosmo. Are the days of Google’s multi-decade dominancy in search numbered? With OpenAI’s announcement of their SearchGPT prototype, it certainly seems that way!

I routinely call upon ChatGPT (and other AI tools) for searches that I used to visit a traditional search engine for. Anecdotally, I hear similar stories from friends too.

With the introduction of a UX optimized for search similar to Perplexity, ChatGPT will become even better suited for these types of queries. It’s unclear precisely how large of an impact this will have on Google’s core business, but the economic model for search will evolve at the very least.

Searching for things on Google has been a fundamental part of my life for as long as I can remember (I was born in 1994). The concept of LLMs possibly replacing search engines is an exciting reminder that nothing in tech (or life, for that matter) lasts forever.
